The nonprofit Bangor Beautiful and the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce are bringing a major new community mural to the heart of downtown Bangor. Maine artist Rachel Gloria Adams will transform the large exterior wall at 2 Hammond Street with a 3-story mural incorporating Bangor-inspired patterns created by local artists, Juliana Cantreli, Nina Earley, Annette Dodd, Karen Nichols, and Carile Deshane. Installation is expected to begin mid September, with a community celebration planned for September 26th  4 to 6pm at 2 Hammond Street.

“We are delighted to partner with Bangor Beautiful to install a new mural on the building we proudly call home in downtown Bangor. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate and promote the arts than by showcasing creative talent right on our own building. Projects like this enhance our quality of life, strengthen community pride, and attract both visitors and residents to our downtown,” said Deb Neuman, President and CEO of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce.

BANGOR, THROUGH THE EYES OF LOCAL ARTISTS. Each artist created a pattern inspired by Bangor. Karen Nichols celebrates the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race, while Carlie Deshane highlights downtown’s historic architecture and Nina Earley depicts the Penobscot River. Julianna Venturelli references Stephen King through his home and characters from books such as It. Annette connects Bangor’s lumber history with its present-day commitment to planting trees and beautifying the city. 

The three-story Community mural will incorporate the local Bangor-inspired patterns as well as Rachel Gloria Adams designs and artists style.

WHY COMMUNITY? Community gives people a sense of belonging and reminds us that we’re part of something larger than ourselves. When neighbors know one another they build trust and the resilience to grow together. We hope this mural, rooted in the spirit of Bangor, can turn a blank brick wall into a mirror, reflecting shared identity, sparking connection, and adding beauty to our everyday lives.

ABOUT THE ARTIST. Rachel Gloria Adams is a multidisciplinary artist based in Portland, Maine, known for vibrant, graphic patterns inspired by the natural world, family, textiles, and place. Her work spans painting, quilting, design, and large-scale public murals.
