Running to grow Maine's economy
Event Description:
Join us at the historic Bangor Opera House to learn what drives Gary -- and ask him your questions, too!

Gary Allen is from Great Cranberry Island, and he spent much of his youth running the little over two mile island. A runner all his life, Allen has competed in more than a hundred marathons and recently joined the elite club of runners who have run sub-3 hour marathons in 5 different decades. But more more importantly, he has raised thousands of dollars for charities.

In 2015 a news article about the rise in unemployment in Millinocket Maine stuck with Allen, and he formed what some are calling the first flash mob marathon. As of July 2018 over 1000 people have registered to run in the Millinocket Marathon and Half this December.

Last year, the marathon raised $30,000 in donations from runners and others for the race's two official donation causes: Our Katahdin, and the Millinocket Memorial Library. That number doesn’t even begin to take into account the thousands of dollars spent at the businesses around town. The race is continuing to grow and inspire others to start similar events in the region.
