Reprocesses and terminally sterilizes surgical & medical instruments and equipment.

High School Graduate or Equivalent
The Technician must be able to pass the national certification test for sterile processing technicians, once reaching eligibility (1-2 years of experience depending on hire date) and to maintain that certification through successful completion of offered continuing education units.

Basic knowledge of biology to understand infection control and medical terminology relating to instrument decontamination, sterilization and packaging procedures; the ability to identify, by name and surgical specialty, a large variety of surgical instruments; the ability to prioritize workload; the ability to deal positively with a variety of customers, oftentimes in highly stressful situation; the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting. The Technician must recognize the professional responsibility for maintaining instrumentation, equipment and supplies for all Operating Rooms and all other departments served by Sterile Processing. Failure to do so can compromise patient care, staff and physician satisfaction, and the cost of business.
